Site Name:

Hay House
Location:
Macon, GA - Bibb County
Physical Address:
934 Georgia Ave, Macon, GA 31201

Description:

Hay House (Johnston-Felton-Hay) is designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, unusual for residential architecture, most particularly in the South in the 1850s. It is chiefly characterized by arches and curves. The central block of the house is flanked by two wings which are identical, at least from the exterior. The cupola serves as part of the ventilation system, acting as a chimney which helps to draw the hot air up and out of the house. (Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation)

Historic Significance:

Guided tours teach visitors about the national significance of the architecture, its technological advances and its artistic sophistication. Guests also hear a rich social history: the Johnstons, Feltons and Hays were all historically significant families, adapting the house to their own lifestyles. Each year, more than 30,000 visitors enjoy the house's decorative arts collection, stained-glass windows and handsome cabinetry. (Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation)
