ALLENTOWN

Description / Historic Significance:

Settled in the late 1800s, the City of Allentown was first known as ‘Allen’s Crossroads.’ The area was named after its first postmaster, John Allen; records indicate he was postmaster beginning in 1887. The cross roads community of Allen’s Crossing was formally incorporated as the town of Allentown in 1901, with Dr. E.J. Denson as Mayor and P.W.L. Meadows, J.W. Allen, W.M. Allen, J.T. Land and A.H. Rosar, Esqs. As Aldermen. By 1910, the population of Allentown was just 150 persons and through the years the community has maintained its crossroads community status with a population of only 287, according to the 2000 Census.
