County History: Houston County was created on May 15, 1821 by an act of the General Assembly (Ga Laws 1821 Extra Session, p.3) from Creek Indian land that had been ceded under the Treaty of Indian Springs. The 51st county in Georgia, Houston County was named for John Houston, a member of the Continental Congress and Governor of Georgia from 1778 to 1784. The spelling of the county later evolved to “Houston;” however, the pronunciation remains to this day “howston.”

County Seat: Perry
The December 24, 1821 act organizing Houston County authorized the justices of the inferior court to select the county seat location. In 1823, Houston County’s inferior court selected land lot 49 in the tenth district as the county seat site. On December 21, 1823, the legislature designated this site as the permanent county seat and named it Perry, in honor of U.S. Navy Captain Oliver Hazard Perry. Captain Perry, who stated “We have met the enemy and they are ours,” defeated the British in the Battle of Lake Erie.
